The National Business Travel Network (NBTN), part of the government’s ‘Act on CO2′ campaign, is calling on businesses to implement smart travel plans for staff to cut costs and reduce carbon emissions.
Reducing unnecessary and costly travel can help companies cope in the tough economic climate, as well as helping the environment. Fortunately for businesses, staff are keen to embrace flexible ways of working that are more eco-friendly and productive.
Flexible and home working has been proven to save companies considerable costs. BT has also calculated that a reduction in commuting by home workers has resulted in over 7.5 million kg of CO2 emissions being avoided from journeys. Other companies, such as BSkyB and E-ON, have also implemented smart travel plans successfully.
Recent research by NBTN, of employees who travel to work in the UK, revealed that 63 per cent would take up a work travel plan if their company offered one. This would include using more sustainable modes of transport, as well as flexible or home working.
More than one in four (28 per cent) of those surveyed stated that flexible working would also increase loyalty to an employer and over a fifth (24 per cent) felt it would significantly improve their productivity.
Jon Marsh, Head of Agility at BT Global Services, believes that through their partnership with NBTN, BT will communicate the effectiveness of work place travel plans and smarter working practices to other organisations.
Following the adoption of these working practices, BT have been able to not only make large financial savings and productivity improvements, but have also created a more sustainable organisation through reducing travel and CO2 emissions.
