Worldwide smartphone market expands

According to a report on the state of play in the global smartphone market, VoIP traffic is forecast to grow even more in 2010.

The report shows that in the forth quarter of 2009 global smartphone shipments had jumped 30 per cent, year-on-year, marking the industry’s fasted growth rate since the third quarter of 2008.

Sales were pushed higher due to a greater selection of smartphones being available to consumers, especially updated versions of the iPhone and Blackberry.

The majority of smartphones are Wi-FI capable, which is necessary for the effective use of VoIP. Therefore as the smartphone market increases, so too does the potential consumer-base for VoIP products.

Also as VoIP traffic rises in tandem with the smartphone market, growth can also be expected in the data centre sectors of the telecom industry as they provide the infrastructure necessary for the widespread adoption of VoIP.
