Remote working helps financial blow of snow storms

One in five people were unable to get to work because of heavy snowfall in recent days, but this proved to be no problem for staff who could log into corporate systems remotely.

More enlightened employers already allow their staff to work smarter, enabling them to work flexibly from home. However, these tend to be large companies with big resources that represent only 20 per cent of the UK economy; the majority of small and medium-sized businesses are still not sufficiently prepared.

BT business has stated that flexible working could’ve saved businesses £333 million in one day alone during the torrid weather conditions.

BT recently announced that on Monday 2nd February 2009 (the day of the big freeze) broadband traffic from its consumer customer base was around 20 per cent up on the same day from the previous week, with millions of people not being able to make it to work.

Weather disruption is snow joke for businesses

Businesses are facing widespread disruptions after the heaviest snowfalls across much of England for more than a decade. Commuters in London and the south-east were particularly affected as the snow brought cancellations to train and bus services, as well as dangerous conditions on the roads.

This led to the business continuity plans and flexible working practices of firms being put in the spotlight, with millions of people not being able to get to the office, losing organisations vast amounts of money.
