The UK is leading the way on flexible working policies

The UK is head and shoulders above France and Germany when it comes to flexible working and workforce mobility, new research reveals.

According to Citrix Online, responding to growing regulatory, social and environmental pressures, almost half of UK businesses (47%) have seen an increase in workforce mobility over the past five years, compared to 31% in France and 27% in Germany.

Harrow leads the way

The London Borough of Harrow is taking a lead in mobile working, according to the Harrow Times.

Harrow Council hopes to save around £300,000 by ditching its housing department offices and investing in laptops and scanners to allow council officers to work on the road. The new way of working is being phased in and, if it proves successful, could be rolled out across all council departments.

The Harrow Times itself is following a similar path, equipping all its journalists with laptops, mobile phones and digital cameras, so they can be based outside the office.

 

Flexitime latest victim of downturn

The Government’s announcement that it is reviewing its decision to extend flexible working, as reported in BBC online among others, has provoked a mixed reception.

While industry leaders welcomed Business Secretary Lord Mandelson’s controversial move, designed to ease the burden on smaller firms in uncertain economic times, others, gave it a cool reception.
