Flexible working could deliver energy savings

New research has highlighted the energy savings that could be made if more UK employers adopted flexible working practices for office-based staff.

The survey of 20,000 office-based employees by consultancy firm Advanced Workplace Associates (AWA) showed the huge gap between the proportion of employees who say they would like some kind of flexible working (91 per cent) and the proportion that already have it (21 per cent).

The recently-published study revealed that 16 per cent of workers have considered resigning from their jobs due to the length of their commute, rising to 33 per cent when the commute is longer than one hour.

Flexible working push by Jobcentres welcomed by employers

Business groups and campaigners have broadly welcomed the government’s move to encourage employers to offer all jobs flexibly - as long as it is not enshrined in law.

Work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper has revealed that, from later this year, every time a new full-time vacancy is advertised in a Job Centre, the employer will be asked if the position can instead be offered part-time, as a job-share, or another variant of flexible working.
