B&Q advocates of flexible working

B&Q has been a long-time advocate of flexible working, as well as a diverse workforce, and is a finalist in the Innovation of Flexible Working category. A quarter of the workforce is over the age of 50, with a similar number under 25. These groups are identified as most in need of flexible working arrangements.

B&Q has introduced policies such as term-time contracts for parents and grandparents, an online job share register and the facility for older workers to reduce their hours and draw final-salary pensions at the same time.

Row over flexible working legislation

Parenting charities have hit back at business owners who want to delay the legal right to request flexible working to parents with children under 16.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is concerned that the new law will harm small firms by making them unable to retain or employ extra staff and are urging the government to hold off passing it. However, parents have welcomed the legislation and have told the Family and Parenting Institute (FPI) that they want to work flexibly.
