Work is not a place to go to

Digital technology has completely changed the face of working. In fact work has become something that you do, rather than a place to go as flexible working increases in popularity. And this brings benefits to both businesses and employees by reducing travel time, increasing productivity as well as rationalising office space and costs.

You can work from home, an airport or hotel lounge, coffee bar or on a train, so long, course, as you have the right technology.

 

Female entrepreneurs go for flexibility

According to a report sponsored by NatWest, successful business women are starting up their own businesses for more flexible working and a better work-life balance rather than seeking independence.

Although 58% of women questioned were driven by being their own boss, nearly as many (57%) cited flexibility, closely followed by 46% of respondents prioritising work-life balance.

Women are still reported to be underrepresented among start-up entrepreneurs.

 

 

Working smarter rather than downsizing

The economic downturn is having an effect on flexible work patterns, as reported in an online recruitment magazine – but not in the way you may anticipate. Rather than less flexibility, more could become the norm.

According to onrec.com, polls show that more women are going back to work or working longer hours because of concerns about a possible recession. And when they do, they are looking for more flexible working or home working in order to achieve balance in their lives. Continue reading…

Flexitime latest victim of downturn

The Government’s announcement that it is reviewing its decision to extend flexible working, as reported in BBC online among others, has provoked a mixed reception.

While industry leaders welcomed Business Secretary Lord Mandelson’s controversial move, designed to ease the burden on smaller firms in uncertain economic times, others, gave it a cool reception.

Royal Mail tips for success

The Royal Mail is running a campaign aimed at small businesses to promote the benefits of flexible working.

One lingerie company, praised by the Government for its flexible approach, is supporting the campaign with a case study. Its founder Susan Johnson drew up flexible working contracts to enable employees to work between 9am-3pm, she commented in The Northern Echo that sharing the benefits of their collective experience would be beneficial to others looking to achieve growth plans.
